The vessel features a monkey eating a piece of fruit and monochromatic geometric designs throughout. The piece is in good condition with minor wear consistent with the piece’s age. This is a Terminal Classic period toad effigy vessel from the Chiapas area of Mexico, dating to circa 800 – 1000 CE. This Tohil Plumbate jar has characteristics expected of reduction fired vessels from Soconusco. It depicts a toad replete with parotid glands, most likely a Cane Toad or Bufo Marinus. The piece is in superb condition, with good mineral deposits and trails covering the lustrous metallic sheen of a slip. < ...click for details

This is a Japanese ningyō of Shōki slaying an oni dating to the late Edo Period, circa 19th century. The story of Shōki involves a man who passed his imperial examinations and received top honors, but was stripped of the title due to his ugly appearance. Distraught by this Shōki took his own life on the steps of the place. The emperor, upset by this, buried Shōki with honors in a green robe.
