This Japanese priest’s kesa was made from the yardage of a Chinese ch’ao-pao- an unusual use for a formal court robe! The yardage is a brocaded silk of extremely high quality and workmanship, and the work on the kesa is of very high quality. A striking piece, it dates to the first half of the nineteenth century.

This antique Japanese fukasa is an example of an excellent brocade piece. A man sits in a ship laden with goods; the sail blows in the breeze, is decorated in Japanese writing, and is outlined in silver. The ship itself is outlined in a salmon color, and the packages aboard the vessel are colored an olive green, blue, orange, and salmon.
