This work is a house ornament from a traditional Batik house. It is of a form called a "Jorngon" or "Jenggar" depicting a mythical tricornic animal or singha head. This is a box from the Kuba culture in Zaire, circa 1920-30. The box has an incised geometric design carved around the outside, and a face carved into the center of a raised lid. The box was used by a Kuba tribe to hold tukula, a red powder made of ground cam wood. This red powder was used for decoration of one’s hair and body, as the red color distinguishes beauty in the culture.
