This Fukusa represents a court scene. It was done in a combination of embroidery and painting with couched embroidery, chain and satin stitch. This piece dates circa 1880.
This is a type of Japanese textile used for gift-wrapping or for purifying equipment during a Japanese tea ceremony. The choice of a fukusa appropriate to the occasion was an important part of the gift-giving ritual. The practice of covering a gift became widespread during the Edo or Tokugawa period (1615–1867).
