This contoured hanging would have been hung above a doorway or altar during a festive occasion. This particular hanging is very complex, with an elaborate figural composition embroidered in satin stitch and Peking stitch against a background entirely covered with couched gold threads. The upper section has a scene of the natural world, with deer and cranes shown amidst pines and peaches. The lining of the piece is imperial yellow damask woven silk with a cloud pattern. The piece had been stored folded for years, which has resulted in some permanent folds in some of the metallic threads, and the blue trim has been stabilized. This piece is of amazing quality and workmanship, and would have been used for an important ceremony. Circa 1870.
Dimensions: 37.75” x 51 This item is featured in gallery owner Paul Haig’s new book, Threads Of Gold: Chinese Textiles Ming to Ch’ing, available now from Schiffer Books and our website! |
