This is an antique Japanese Negoro lacquer inro featuring shi-shi or foo dog and phoenix motifs. The inro does not have a string or ojime. The peice dates to the Edo period during the 18th century. The inro is in good condition with wear from use as noted in the photographs. This would make an excellent addition to anyone’s collection.
The name Negoro comes from Negoro temple in Kishu. There was a monk in the temple that made a lacquer ware for his daily use. Rather than aesthetics, the monk wished for usefulness and durability, and his ware was applied with many layers of black lacquer with a finishing coat of red. Using it day after day produced a pattern. This combination of red and black was later to be known as Negoro lacquer. Dimensions: PLEASE NOTE: We are a working gallery and are not available to answer questions on weekends. All of our pieces are Guaranteed Genuine, no reproductions! |
