This 19th century micromosaic brooch features an exceptionally fine rendering of St. Peter's Square, Rome. The scene, which looks like an oil painting, is created with with hundreds of minute, colored glass tiles or tessarae set into an oval of black onyx. This is a beautiful little 14k yellow gold (no karat mark) brooch set with five round faceted pink rubies of approximately 2.5 mm each. The weight of the brooch is approximately 5 grams. The size is 25 mm at the widest, about one inch. The pin has a 'C' type safety closure.
