Vintage Hawaii Watercolor-Robert Eskridge
A beautiful and large watercolor painting of a hala tree (pandandus) beside the ocean in Hawaii. It was painted by Robert Lee Eskridge (1891 - 1975) and it has the wonderful, vibrant colors for which he is known. It's framed under glass in a wood frame which appears to be the original one. It still has the original paper on the back which I've left intact. The sight size of the image is 15" x 19 5/8". The framed size is 22" x 26 1/2". It probably dates to the 1940s.

It is signed lower right in brown ink, 'Robert Lee Eskridge', 'To Pat', 'Honolulu'. On the back of the frame is penciled 'Robert Eskridge "Pandanus Tree" and 'Send to Mrs. Pauline A. Sm_ed, _ _ _9 Hood Avenue, Chicago 26 Illinois.' The painting is in fine condition. The frame has what looks like small paint smudges, two or three, which may be seen in the photos. There is a reflection on the glass in some of the photos.

Robert Lee Eskridge arrived in Hawaii in 1932 where he lived and worked for many years. He was born in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, studied at the University of Southern California, at the Art Institute of Chicago, and in Paris. He executed several murals in Chicago, including the Marco Polo series in the Palmer House. In 1933 he received a commission to provide a mural for the Hawaiian exhibit at the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago. The interior of the Sports Pavilion at Ala Moana Park, built by the Works Progress Administration, was decorated with Eskridge's colorful murals of the makahiki. He taught at the University of Hawaii from 1939 to 1941. He died in Honolulu in 1975. This information was gathered from the book 'Encounters With Paradise, Views of Hawaii and Its People, 1778-1941' by David W. Forbes.
