Micro Mosaic Brooch St. Peter's Square
This 19th century micromosaic brooch features an exceptionally fine rendering of St. Peter's Square, Rome. The scene, which looks like an oil painting, is created with with hundreds of minute, colored glass tiles or tessarae set into an oval of black onyx. Many of the micromosaics of this era featured architectural sites which were copied from 17th and 18th century paintings. This brooch is set into a simple gold mounting with a rope twist border. There are no karat marks or hallmarks on the gold. This is a large brooch at 2 3/8" wide by 1 3/4" high. It's large enough to be pinned onto velvet in a frame to be enjoyed when not being worn. It's in fine condition, has a smooth surface with no missing tessarae and there are no repairs.
