This is a girl's cotton haori which has tiny katazome pattern ( komon ). Komon is stencil-resist-dyeing which was developed in Edo period and was used for samurai's kimono as well as common peole's kimono. This girl's haori is made of handwoven cotton. This is a silk crepe fukusa with beautiful two cranes which are embroidered. Red silk crepe is dyed with "benibana ( safflower )" and other dyes are all vegetable ones. In good condition but the embroidery of the tail feathers of both cranes seem lost or unfinished and it also has some stains. Late Edo period ( ca. mid 19th C ). 73cm x 77cm 28"4/5 x 30"1/3

This is a large furoshiki with "noshi" design. Noshi is an ornament attached to a gift which used to be a bunch of flattened abalone strips in old days but they are replaced with paper cords these days. It also has treasure ball design in the noshi pattern. Both are auspicious patterns. The technique is "tsutsugaki" which uses rice paste as resist and hand painted. This is a cotton katazome ( stencil-resist-dyeing ) futon cover which is handwoven and natural indigo dyed. The pattern is called "mukai tsuru" which a pair of cranes face each other. It has a mending patch ( 4.5cm x 7.5cm ) in the middle panel and some patina ( not very noticeable ). It has nice thick texture. Meiji era ( 1868~1912 ). 100cm x 170cm 39" x 67"

This is a beautiful asa white kasuri han-juban ( short under kimono ) which is handspun, handwoven and natural indigo dyed. It is probably Echigo kasuri. Echigo is an old name for Niigata prefecture which is located in the middle of Honshu, the Japan Sea side. White ground kasuri is less common as it needs more work to make resist compared to indigo blue ground kasuri. In good condition except for a 1" rip near the collar in the back. This is a han-juban called "ase-hajiki ( literal meaning is sweat repleller ) which was worn under kimono in summer. The body is made of handwoven asa and sleeves are also handwoven asa dyed with natural indigo. In good condition except for many holes mostly in the sleeves near jointing seams with the body. This is an asa han-juban ( short under kimono ) made of handwoven asa with beautiful katazome ( stencil-resist-dyeing ) and dyed with natural indigo. Two different stencils are used for this pattern, one is stripe and the other is wave. It has beautiful silk crepe collar. In good condition except for several small holes. Meiji period ( 1868~1912 ). 120cm x 58cm 47"x23"
