This is a cotton katazome ( stencil-resist-dyeing ) noragi ( farm wear ) which is made of handwoven cotton and dyed with natural indigo. One of the motifs of katazome is cherry blossom and the other is three auspicious plants, bamboo, pine tree and Japanese plum flower. This katazome is called "Sendai Tokiwa-zome". Sendai is a city now in Miyagi prefecture in Tohoku ( north-east ) district. In excellent condition. Meiji period ( 1868~1912 ). 126cm x 130

This is a shibori ( tie-dyeing ) han-juban ( short under kimono ) whose body part is made of handwoven cotton and dyed with natural indigo. The technique is called "Te-Kumo Shibori" ( hand-bound spiderweb ). Sleeves are made of silk crepe. In excellent condition. Meiji period ( 1868~1912 ). 126cm x 68cm

This is a dochugi which was worn for the trip or outdoor. It is made of thick indigo dyed cotton and has katazome ( stencil-resist-dyeing ) lining. It has a slit for the sword in the right back side. In excellent condition as it looks scarcely worn. Late Edo or Early Meiji period ( ca. mid 19th C ). 128cm x 85cm

This is a hakama ( pants ) which is hand woven of kudzu fibers for wefts and cotton threads for warps. Kudzu-fu was mostly produced in Kakegawa in Shizuoka prefecture in late Edo. This kudzu-fu hakama was worn in summer. In good condition except for several holes ( 1cm x 1cm ~ 0.5mm x 0.5mm ). Length 82cm. Late Edo or early Meiji period ( mid or late 19th C ).

This is a futon cover made of handwoven cotton. It has a bold and lively "noshi" design which is free hand painting using rice paste as resist ( tsutsugaki ). Noshi is an ornament made of flattened abalone strips and attached to a gift in old days but it is replaced with paper these days. It has nice thick texture. It has several mending patches. Meiji period ( 1868~1912 ). 166cm x 198cm 65" x 78"

This is beautiful and elaborate katazome ( stencil-resist-dyeing ) han-juban. This katazome is called "Narumi Kongata" which looks alike shibori ( tie-dyeing ) as craftsman tried stencil-resist dying which has touch of tie-dyeing. Narumi as well as Arimatsu has been a product region of shibori textiles since Edo period. It has beautiful bat design. The body part is in excellent condition, however both sleeves has holes.
