This is a wooden large size kanban (shop sign) of "ryo-gae-ya". Ryo-gae means "exchange" and ryo-gae-ya did banking business, too. Same kanji letters "ryo-gae" are engraved in both sides. It is in the shape of weight. It has many dents, chips and mending with lacquer. ca. mid or late 19th C. 53cm x 58cm 21.0"x22.8" 5.5cm 2.2" thick

Thia is a kanban (shop sign) of a vinegar shop. Hiragana letter "su" means vinegar and it is in the shape of a jar in which vinegar was fermented. It has the sign who carved this shop sign reads as "Kagetoshi". Late Edo to Meiji era (ca. mid 19th C). In excellent condition. 35cm x 44cm 13.8"x17.3" Thickness 3cm 1.2"

This wooden tobacco tray with drawers is an another example of beautiful craftsmanship in old days. Two copper containers are for ash (larger one) and water(smaller one).
