This is a wooden large size kanban (shop sign) of "ryo-gae-ya". Ryo-gae means "exchange" and ryo-gae-ya did banking business, too. Same kanji letters "ryo-gae" are engraved in both sides. It is in the shape of weight. It has many dents, chips and mending with lacquer. ca. mid or late 19th C. 53cm x 58cm 21.0"x22.8" 5.5cm 2.2" thick

Thia is a kanban (shop sign) of a vinegar shop. Hiragana letter "su" means vinegar and it is in the shape of a jar in which vinegar was fermented. It has the sign who carved this shop sign reads as "Kagetoshi". Late Edo to Meiji era (ca. mid 19th C). In excellent condition. 35cm x 44cm 13.8"x17.3" Thickness 3cm 1.2"

Wooden shop sign (kanban) of an exchange shop. The two kanji read as "ryogae" mean exchange. They did exchange money and banking business, too. In the shape of weight. Late Edo or Meiji period (late 19th C).

This wooden tobacco tray with drawers is an another example of beautiful craftsmanship in old days. Two copper containers are for ash (larger one) and water(smaller one). Noshi (an ornament put on a gift ) pattern is carved out in the back. In good condition except for two chips in front. Meiji era ( 1868~1912). Height 16.5cm 6.5" Width 24.5cm 9.6" Depth 14cm 5.5"

Beautiful black and red urushi Ariake Andon. A full, half and crescent moon are carved on a lower rack. Andon is an oil lampstand with a wood frame and paper shade. Ariake andon is an one which is kept alight all night. The degree of brightness is controlled by covering the upper box with a lower rack. In excellent condition, with an original wooden box. This is a kanban(shop sign)of a shop. Reads as "Yamayoshi" or "Yamakichi", shop's name. It shows skillful craftsmanship of sheet metal worker which can be hardly found in these days. Wood and copper. Late Edo or Meiji Era (Mid 19th C). 19cm x 40cm 7.5"x15.7"
