Japanese Antique Wooden Lunch Box Late Edo
These are bento-bako ( lunch box ) made of rolled wood ( mage-wappa ). The wood sheet is cut out not with a saw but with a machete so that you can see the uneven surface of the wood grain. The urushi technique is "tame-nuri" which is: the colored urushi is coated first, and then the transparent urushi is coated after it is dried. Generally in good condition but one of the lids is mended and a bit tight. It has an original wooden box and it is written in the inside of the lid that the box was made in the 3rd year of Bunkyu ( 1864 ), so these are made in very late Edo period. Each one has minor chips and one has a hair line in the back of the lid. Diameter:13cm Height:7.5cm
