Japanese Antique Textile Sashiko Woman's Noragi

This is a noragi ( work wear ), called "makanai" in Tohoku district, according to Tanaka Chuzaburo who has been researching folklore in Aomori prefecture in Tohoku and collecting folk crafts and country textiles for more than 40 years. ( The last photo is from the catalogue of his collection ). The outside is made of asa ( hemp ) which is lightly natural indigo dyed and the inside is made of bleached cotton. It has horizontal elaborate sashiko with indigo dyed cotton threads. It has several pieces of indigo dyed asa and cotton cloth in the top and both sleeves which make beautiful accent. In excellent condition. Late 19th to early 20th century. 122.5cm x 91cm
