Kobe toys are wooden mechanical dolls. Production began after the opening of the Kobe port in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan in 1868 as a high-class expensive souvenir that only foreigners who came to Kobe with luxurious ships could afford to purchase. This lovely piece is 6" long and 4" high. The neck and arm are animated - as you push the cart the neck elongates and the arm bangs the drum. Black forest wooden handcarved vintage bear. The bear's arms and jointed legs swivel controlled by strings at the back. It measures 14" inches long and has the original dark brown patina. This bear is wonderfully hand carved and is in super condition. He has his mouth open with a really well carved face full of detail, he has expressive brown glass eyes.
