Here is a ring with a secret code - it has 6 stones in a particular sequence as follows: Ruby, Emerald, Garnet, Amethyst, Ruby and Diamond, spelling out the word REGARD. The recipient of this ring knows that the donor holds her in high regard. This is a superb and early example of symbolic jewellery and dates from around 1835. 19th Century Carved Ivory Netsuke of an old medicine man with beard holding a bowl sitting on a Tortoise (symbol of longevity) with a comical long-suffering expression on its face. The child (apprentice) is climbing up on to its back and holding a gourd of potions attached by a string to the old man. Lovely detail to hair, costumes and tortoise shell.
