Most of the Chinese porcelain I sell dates from the latter half of the Qing dynasty with a concentration in Guangxu minyao pieces. The tremendous variation found in porcelains of this period, coupled with still-developing market interest and new scholarship, makes this an exciting time to collect later Chinese porcelain. My other area of focus, ethnographic edged weapons, is also experiencing a flowering of interest as expressed through new internet forums, publications, and conferences. These fields have never been so dynamic and accessible.
Porcelain and swords are connected by their shared ability to communicate important historical and cultural information to us now. Whether it be a Chinese Kangxi blue and white brushpot or an Indo-Persian wootz shamshir, the piece provides the collector with insight to the aesthetic, political, technological, and religious aspects of the culture from which it comes.
