This painting was painted by Mami Yamamoto-Finke, who is a Japanese native living in the U.S. for the last 26 years. She has practiced Japanese calligraphy all her life and has started to paint with sumi ink several years ago. She adores down to earth motifs and folk arts so her paintings reflects those elements. This particular painting shows a simple presence of a female farmer who dresses in traditional indigo kasuri (ikat) clothes, which are harder and harder to see in contemporary Japanese ...click for details

This classic style of Japanese choshi sake serving pot is made from cast-iron and it comes with a delicately made bronze lid. The shape of the pot is clean and simple and there are four character inscriptions, which read "Sen-Gen-no-Cho-Ja." One of the most loved “bucket.” This type of wooden bucket was used by rice shops for measuring rice. The full bucket measures ‘ittoh’ which is approximately 15 kilogram or 18 litter. The bucket is reinforced by rustic iron trims and the trims also define the beauty of the shape. There are a pair of handles on both sides and an inscription of ‘Kyoto’ on the side. This type of bucket is frequently used to hold magazines or as a small side table by adding a round glass top. It is truly a love ...click for details

This square wooden container was used to measure grains in Japan. This particular piece was to measure one ‘sho’, which is approximately 1.5 kilogram. The measurer is made from Japanese cedar, ‘sugi’, and is beautifully crafted with iron edges. The vertical reinforcement by iron is applied alternatively on each corner and the top of the measurer is entirely defined by iron too. On the sides there are a logo, a circled ‘kyo’, which was probably the logo of the grain shop, possibly in Kyoto. Oth ...click for details

A set of six Japanese Imari rice bowls depicts precisely hand-painted floral and other auspicious motifs. The blue and white pattern is also effectively placed at the very bottom of the bowl. The interior of the bowl has a ‘mikomi’ pattern at the bottom with birds and pine-like design, along with a fine geometric pattern on the rim. The six matched lids show continuing designs from the bowl. The set is made from fine porcelain and they are from the end of 1800s (the Meiji era). The conditio ...click for details

We found this beautiful futon cover in Fukuoka, Japan in our latest trip. The cover possesses a traditional pattern of Kurume-gasuri (kasuri) and its dynamic and geometric design is very attractive and stunning. The two types of “cluster” designs show a chrysanthemum-like floral motif and “I-gata”, well-crib, motif in center respectively. The placement of the patterns is somewhat irregular and it emphasizes the unique “movement” of overall impression. The backing fabric is a solid indigo kasu ...click for details
