Date Mid-Showa era (1940-1960). This boy's miyamairi (Shinto christening) silk kimono features depictions of ships laden with traditional treasures. These treasures include a wish-granting mallet, a bottomless purse, a cape of invisibility, coral and a rhinocerous horn: all symbols of good fortune. Taisho era (1912-1926).This stunning silk haori features both an unusual design and technique. I believe that this textile was created as follows: a long white silk bolt is initially patterned with complex meisen ikat parrot patterns. Following this, the parrot-design area are tied of while the rest of the textile is patterned with shibori tie-dye pine-tree motifs.
