France
mid-19th century (1840-1875)
This runner has elegant embroidery patterns of metal and cotton thread worked on a velvet background. Fine twill backing material. Good overall condition with a few frayed spots on the embroidery and a circular wear spot where a candleholder or other plate sat for many years. An unusual feature is the inclusion of fine coiled metal springs in the fringe on each end. 91" x 16.5".

Spain
First half 19th century (1800-1850)
The general style with finely-worked silk, silver and gold metal threads on hand-made linen seems to indicate a date of first half of 19th century, but could be older. Perhaps this was a textile made in a Convent or Monastary, as the picture itself seems to depict religious grounds. The backing consists of a light olive-coloured silk material. Excellent condition with just a few stray threads. 6" x 6"
