Date Late Meiji to early Taisho (1890-1920). A stunning kimono that has a yuzen-dyed bamboo pattern over bold alternating blue and yellow vertical color bands. There are sparse metallic thread highlights. Red silk momi-silk lining. Very good condition with several small areas of discoloration. 49" from sleeve-end to sleeve-end x 59" height.

Mid Meiji Era (1875-1900). This chirimen silk kurotomesode has a ryozumo (mirror image) design that depicts birds, pine trees and a stream created with yuzen-dyeing and sagara, metal-thread and simple-stitch embroidery. Five large mon (family crests). Very good condition. 49" from sleeve-end to sleeve-end x 60" height.

Late Edo or early Meiji (1840-1880). This soft silk rinzu wedding robe has classic motifs of flying cranes, pine trees, tortoises and bamboo accomplished utilizing yuzen resist dyeing as well as sagara, satin-stitch and couching embroidery. Five large mon (family crests). The condition is fair to good, with several large breaks within the inner lining and outside due to weakening of the silk. 51" from sleeve-end to sleeve-end x 59" height.

Late Edo or early Meiji (1840-1880). I am assuming that this uchikake was shortened and taken in at the bottom, as it is about 14" shorter than the average of this style. This very soft silk rinzu wedding robe has classic motifs of flying cranes, pine trees and bamboo accomplished utilizing yuzen resist dyeing as well as sagara, satin-stitch and couching embroidery. Late Meiji or early Tasho era (1900-1920). This kimono would have been one of the earlier rayon example that were introduced to Japan in the early 20th century. At that time rayon was considered to be more valuable than silk, and thus was commisioned by some wealthier families. The design features brush-painting with some metallic-thread couching. Late Meiji to early Taisho (1900-1920). Rather than being a patchwork made from different stitched samples, this old kinsha-silk juban was created from lengths of cloth dyed with sample patterns. The inner lining is of a hand-spun silk. Very good condition. 48" from sleeve-end to sleeve-end x 52" height.

Late Meiji era (1880-1911). This is the inner of a kasane set of two tomesode (the other in this set is item 1708a). This is a striking garment, with a purple and mustard green geometric patterning along the silk upper body and sleeves, and a vivid red silk lining covering a light cotton padding. The hem shows the distinctive silhouette of a snowflake bordering black and beige background with delicate flowers. The flowers on the front are nandine (Nanten) and pheasant's eye (Fukujuso). Late Meiji era (1880-1911). This is the outer of a kasane set of two tomesode (the other in this set is item 1708b). Up until the early 20th century, it was sometimes the custom for wealthier Japanese families to order such kasane sets. This garment is made of a very fine creped silk which is a subdued black with a very slight bluish undertone. The flowers were created by embroidery, yuzen resist dyeing and brush painting. Mid Edo era (1800-1850). This stunning chirimen crepe-silk uchikake wedding garment was created during the Edo era, very likely for a young samurai woman. This garment features twenty-five turtles created with silver and gold couching. Some of the turtle shells are of gold, while others are of a gold/silver mixture.
