Late Meiji Outer Tomesode (formal robe)
Late Meiji era (1880-1911). This is the outer of a kasane set of two tomesode (the other in this set is item 1708b). Up until the early 20th century, it was sometimes the custom for wealthier Japanese families to order such kasane sets. This garment is made of a very fine creped silk which is a subdued black with a very slight bluish undertone. The flowers were created by embroidery, yuzen resist dyeing and brush painting. There are five mon (family crests). Excellent condition. 49" from sleeve-end to sleeve-end x 61" height.
