The Cajamarca culture developed as a small independent state in the north highlands of Peru in wake of the Chavin horizon. Although little is known about this culture, the pottery of the region is distinct, with bold scrolls and geometric designs in brown, black, or red on cream-colored ground. Cajamarca remained independent until it was conquered by the Inca; in a twist of fate, Cajamarca was also the location of Pizarro's ambush of the Inca king Atahualpa in 1532, which marked the end of t ...click for details

The Jamacoaque culture of northern coastal Ecuador is one of many poorly-understood societies that persevered in the northern Andes for centuries. Their wealth seems to have been largely derived from fishing, farming, and the trade of coastal commodities, such as shells. Despite the fact that they left little noteworthy architecture, the pottery figures from these related cultures have grown in popularity in recent years, largely due to the vibrant coloration and striking motifs that these craft ...click for details

This wonderfully spontaneous effigy figure depicts a seated Jamacoaque shaman in deep conversation, caught in the moment of making a point that is emphasized with his pinched fingers. (Given that most of these figures show the shaman taking extensive hallucinogens, who -- or what -- the shaman is talking with is entirely up for debate!)

The Jamacoaque culture of northern coastal Ecuador is one of many poorly-known ...click for details

The Moche culture, which left impressive archaeological sites and some of the most outstanding pottery to be seen in Peru's museums, is named after the river which flows into the ocean just south of Trujillo. (The word Mochica has been used interchangeably with Moche and refers to a dialect spoken in the Trujillo area at the time of the conquest.) The Moche period is especially known for its ceramics, considered the most artistically sensitive and technically developed of any found in Peru. ...click for details

This choice roller seal comes from the Guangala culture of northern Ecuador, likely from the Manteño province. The Guangala were a primarily agricultural people, but like many cultural groups from Ecuador, they were expert navigators and practiced long-range trade with Central America. Their export staples were spondylus shells, cotton weavings, objects of gold, silver and copper, and obsidian mirrors. Accordingly, Ecuadorian art oftentimes feels more familiar to us than many of the products of ...click for details

Beginning in the Middle Paracas Period (ca. 400 B.C.), the Cavernas Trophy Head Cult developed in the Ica Valley of Peru. Increasing population growth had likely made agricultural fertility very salient to the ancient people of Peru, and this growth mirrored a radical change in artistic conventions that focused on fertility. Sacrifices to the gods as a means of assuring fertility had always been important, and the Cavernas cult apparently provided the ceremonial means of harnessing the life/spir ...click for details

What a cute little figure! This figure of an expressive, chubby noble is a good example of why Moche art is appreciated as some of the finest of ancient South America. Constructed in a wide, flat mold from terracotta covered with a creme slip and decorated with red and black highlights, this figure is a nice piece of affordable Moche art.

The Chancay culture (1200-1450 A.D.) was one of many that ruled areas of Peru prior to the conquests of the Incas. The Chancay reigned mainly in the valleys of Chancay and Chillon on the middle coast of Peru. In the early 1400s the Chimú state conquered parts of southern Chancay area, and by 1450 the Incas occupied both areas.

The best-known of the Chancay artifacts are textiles that consist of embroidery work, pain ...click for details

The first archaeological excavations in Nariño, located on the southern border of Colombia, occurred barely 30 years ago, so little is conclusively known about this area. What does seem evident is that three distinct cultural groups occupied the region: the Piartal, Tuza, and Capuli. However, we typically see the output of these three cultures inappropriately lumped together as generic Nariño on dealers' websites. This chalice was produced by the Capuli, whose archaeological complex is situa ...click for details
