The lekythos is a form of Greek pottery that was used as a personal container for oils or perfumes. The Greeks used olive oil for personal hygeine -- after hard exercise at the gymnasium, a wealthy man would pour a thin layer of oil on his skin and scrape it and the sweat off with a curved piece of metal called a strigil.
