Fibulae are elaborate pins used to fasten clothing, and functioned basically like a modern safety pin. (See the last enlargement photo for a painting showing how they were worn.) Ancient civilizations produced such a wide variety of different variations on this basic idea that many collectors focus their purchases exclusively on fibulae from a particular period/culture. Richard Hattatt in particular developed an extensive collection of Roman brooches, and a near-identical example to the fibula o ...click for details

The earliest man-made glass predated the Roman empire by 2000 years, but the Romans used a greater quantity and variety of glass than any other civilization before the Renaissance. The discovery of glassblowing in the first century B.C. transformed glass from a luxury item into the medium for making objects for everyday use. Glass had a long history of production in the eastern Mediterranean, and the majority of common glass objects were produced in Syria and Israel during the later centuries of ...click for details

While this piece of glass doesn't have much in the way of iridescence, it does feature a beautiful base color of rich hunter green -- it glows like an emerald when held up to the light! Sprinkler jars were used in antiquity much as they are today; a pinched bottleneck prevents expensive liquids from running out too quickly, allowing the user to control the amount of liquid withdrawn. In the case of this bottle, the contents were almost certainly a precious oil. ...click for details

Aurelian was born in Sirmium in 207 A.D. Although he came from a family of commoners, Aurelian rose in the military over the course of the reigns of several pervious emperors. Proclaimed emperor through military force around 270 A.D., he quickly solidified his position and leveraged his power into forcing the senate to legitimize his rule. Despite the military's reluctance to support him -- Aurelian was fiercely disciplined and demanding -- under his rule, the empire was restored to its larg ...click for details

Evidence from vase paintings and frescoes indicates that 2-3 dice were in play during most games, and the dice were tossed after shaking them in a cup. Gambling became such an obsession for some Romans, and such a social problem in general, that the government was forced to restrict it. This was indeed unusual for the Romans, as they rarely restricted any type of civil or business activity. The Republic res ...click for details
