This fascinating figure is a Tang Dynasty lokapala, one of a set of four guardian figures placed inside the entrance of the tomb. The earliest known examples of guardian figures date from around the 5th century, coinciding with an increased acceptance of Buddhism in China. This fantastic lot of Han Dynasty pottery includes four pieces in excellent condition. Constructed from dark grey clay that is instantly identifiable as Han, the lot includes a tall granary jar used for storing rice & grains, two globular storage jars, and a simple wheel-made bowl. These are items that would have been used by the common person and were made in large quantities in the northern regions of Han China.
