Ok, so it's technically not an antiquity, but it's definitely ancient!
This is a fine fossil left manus (forepaw) of the cave bear Ursus spelaeus from the Pleistocene (10,000 - 2 million year old) deposits of the Ural Mountain region of Russia. Like hunmans, bears have a plantigrade mode of locomotion, meaning that they walk flat-footed. This is a high-quality museum grade presentation in full articulation carried out by stringing the individual phalanx bones on wire. In life all of the claw bones would have been covered with the actual claws themselves. Bears of this species were truly massive, standing over 10 feet tall on their hind limbs. Our ancestors revered them for their great size, and rightly so! Look here for a picture of a full skeleton: http://www.showcaves.com/images/Big/D047-022.jpg AGE: Pleistocene, ca. 100,000 B.C. CONDITION: Excellent. Nicely articulated and easily displayed! DIMENSIONS: Just under 10" long by 6" wide |
