The pharaoh Amenhotep III had the good luck to be born into kingship at the height of ancient Egypt's success during the 18th Dynasty. His grandfather, Tuthmosis III, had won significant victories in Syria that allowed Egypt to proper through trade and the mining of valuable raw materials. Accordingly, much of Amenhotep's energy was focused inwards on domestic concerns, especially building projects. He is credited with building the temple of Amun at modern Luxor, making major additions and modifications to the famous Temple of Karnak, and constructing his own magnificent palace, Malkata. However, Amenhotep is probably better known through his son, Akhenaten, the "heretic" king who attempted to force monotheism on Egypt in the form of an exclusive worship of Aten, the sun god.
This rare piece features both the throne and birth names of the pharoah and was used as a signature for his authority, most likely by someone authorized to speak for him. One side features the inscription "Nebmaatre," the throne name which translates as "Lord of truth is Re." The reverse is inscribed with the pharaoh's birth name, "Amenhotep" (Amun is pleased) and the epithet "Ruler of Thebes." This is a very important item in excellent condition for the discriminating collector! AGE: Reign of Amenhotep III, during the 18th Dynasty between 1386-1349 B.C. CONDITION: Excellent for the type, with slight chipping to the top of the throne name side that does not obscure the translation. DIMENSIONS: About 2cm in length |
