220,000 yen--Exchange Rates at www.xe.com/ucc/

It's not an O-tsubo (large jar) yet it certainly has that O-factor; great form and classic firing with ash-rivulets, rich 'clay flavor'(tsuchi-aji) and glassy bi-doro. Also notice the lip and how it tops and balances the full form with grace. Also, for its medium size it's surprisingly light, it stands at 35.5cm.tallx30. One of the finest tsubo to come out of Nagaoka's anagama, in perfect condition with a signed box, signed on shoulder and base.

150,000 yen-Under Consideration-Exchange Rates at www.xe.com/ucc/

Nagaoka Masami fires his small anagama to the limit, meaning the works within border on melting into themselves, and just at the right moment he ceases to stoke the kiln. Each work is truly a gift from the kiln gods and the spirit of the man himself. This is a wondrous mizusashi with a custom-made cedar-cherry lid that Nagaoka also made; it stands at 22cm.tallx20, signed on base.

As with a fine hanging scroll, a photograph can compliment and set the mood for a pot. Recently a local photographer's works inspired me with their ethereal moods and evocative chords. I thought surely the pots in our gallery would look stunning with his work, and thus the four photographs today. The artist is Okabe Minoru, born in 1962 not far from our gallery here in Mishima. Okabe has exhibited mostly within Shizuoka prefecture yet as with Sugimoto Hiroshi his work deserves to be seen by ...click for details

I'll never forget a few years back when I took a rather well-known US ceramic artist to Nagaoka Masami's studio, all he could say was "awesome!" when viewing Nagaoka's work. And he said it countless times, so many that in fact it's now one of the few English words Nagaoka knows. Nagaoka Masami(b.1948) fires two small anagama in the hills of the Izu peninsula importing clay from Shigaraki. His forms are always strong and the aforementioned 'A' word. This four-sid ...click for details

185,000 yen--Exchange Rates at www.xe.com/ucc/

Fukami Sueharu, is there any Japanese ceramic artist as internationally celebrated today as he? Most likely not, arguably Fukami is the finest porcelain ceramic artist in the world today. Based in Kyoto, his works are in major museums here in Japan and the world, as well as prominent private collections. Not known to many is that when the spirit takes him Fukami also makes wonderful bowls, of course with his signature glaze and added embellishments of raised lines--brings out a white line---and ...click for details

A lovely contrast of cascading greenish-blue glaze and a crackled light tan glaze make this full-round Agano jar a delight to gaze upon. It is from the Totoki Kaiho(b.1947) kiln that is now in its 13 generation. A fine mingei tsubo in perfect condition, 32cm.tallx31, stamped on base, no box.

We've offered quite a few works by Yamada Kazu (b.1954) in the past, yet this is his first 'dancing fire' Enbu Shino chawan ever. So aptly named, as if the glaze personifies fire as it whirls around the kiln and dances over the dark iron rich clay. A chawan that is mystical and eerie at the same time; quite intense indeed, 8.5cm.tallx13x11.8, signed on base(the dark clay plays a roll in the glaze tones) and with a signed box.

Here is a fine, signature work by internationally celebrated Kyoto ceramic artist Morino Taimei (b.1934). Morino's list of awards and exhibitions over the decades is too long to list here, some museums that hold his work though are National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and Kyoto, MET, New York, V&A, London, and Vallauris Museum of Ceramics, France, among others. This Morino dates to 1988 and has his superb design sense along with his fabulous turquoise, navy blue and ochre brown toned gla ...click for details

We love Yamada Kazu here at the gallery; his innovative take on Mino wares and his unique firing for Iga are refreshing in the way of Okabe Mineo. We recently selected 17 new works by Yamada and here are the only two vases; a truly unique eared Oribe one and a take on classical Iga eared vases, both exceptional in their animated forms and both stand alone as sculpture; one flower though....The Oribe is 28cm.tall, in perfect condition with a signed box, and is 220,000 yen.
