As many of you know Bizen's current Living National Treasure(LNT) is Isezaki Jun(b.1936). This makes Isezaki the fifth LNT from Bizen---the highest of any style--joining the late Kaneshge Toyo, Fujiwara Kei, Yamamoto Toshu and Fujiwara Yu. More about Isezaki can be read on on e-yakimono.net. This is a classic large rakkyo-pearl onion-form tokkuri that these days is better suited as a single bud vase-ichirin. It has an excellent 'clay flavor' front and a bluish-gray natural ash-glazed ...click for details

Here is an important 1992 work from one of Kakurezaki's most celebrated years; most works shown at his MOA Museum Okada Mokichi Award exhibition in 1995 dated to 1992; it's the year his work crystallized into his unique vision of what Bizen can be, breaking free of Momoyama period forms. This work is a stellar example of that with a very fine-rich firing; it's 38cm.tall, signed box, perfect condition, signed on base.

Wakimoto Hiroyuki (b.1952), along with contemporary and fellow Isezaki Jun (current Living National Treasure for Bizen) lineage apprentice Kakurezaki Ryuichi, is one of the major proponents of Bizen's Heisei Revolution. Kakurezaki and Wakimoto brought to Bizen a innovative new sense of design and form that differentiated itself from the Momoyama Restoration of the earlier 20th century (by the likes of Kaneshige Toyo, Yamamoto Toshu, Fujiwara Kei). It's interesting to note that both Wakim ...click for details

Making less than twenty a year--if making them at all--in various sizes, Fukami Sueharu's kaikei (seascapes) seihakuji (bluish-white porcelain) series are quite extraordinary works of art. This one is a porcelain 'haiku' perfect to inspire at one's desk. It stands at 9cm.tall at the 'tail' and is 12cm.wide. Fukami made it on the wheel and then attached it to custom-made wooden stand. In perfect condition, signed S.Fukami on the base, signed box. Fukami is arguably the mos ...click for details

One hardly comes across as well a fired Shigaraki uzukumaru-jar as this one by Nagaoka Masami(b.1948). The 'kiln gods' certainly were in a good mood for this Nagaoka firing, and the intense build up of natural ash glaze is quite dramatic on every side, from the glassy drips and pools to the crusty ash, all in a super piece by this anagama master. The form is a classic uzukumaru squat jar with a cypress fence pattern. Recently a Nagaoka handled bucket vase was added to the famous Manyo ...click for details

Fujiwara Ken (1924-1977) would have surely been designated as a Living National Treasure if he hadn't left this world so early; he was an acclaimed Bizen potter who was designated as an Okayama Prefectural Cultural Property; more about Fujiwara in other listings or our archives. These are two quite different forms with the left being a traditional kinuta-mallet form and the right being a gentle take on a tsubo-jar form; one is precise and the other poetic. Both have excellent firings and are ...click for details
