Here is a superb Hagi kogo by Kaneta Masanao; it was formed in his signature 'carving-out' kurinuki method and thus has a very majestic, sculptural feel. In perfect condition with a signed box, 5cm.tallx8.1x7.5, signed on base. More about Kaneta--an eighth generation Hagi ceramic artist--in our archives or at e-yakimono.net

Bizen's first Living National Treasure Kaneshige Toyo (1896-1967) is one of the most important Bizen potters of all time. Along with other first LNT's, such as Arakawa Toyozo and Nakazato Muan, Kaneshige researched and revived the ancient Momoyama Period ways of clay preparation, kiln building, kiln loading--a key aspect--and firing. The "tsuchi-aji" clay flavor of Toyo is unsurpassed on all his works, and it is he who made both the Kaneshige name, and moreover, Bizen, an integ ...click for details

I first saw the work of Sakai Hiroshi(b.1960) in 2003 for the first time in person. Before that I had seen photos, especially from juried exhibitions such as the Asahi Ceramic Exhibition, Mashiko Ceramic Exhibition, Mino International Ceramic Exhibition, International Competition for Contemporary Ceramic Art, Faenza and Japanese Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition, also in exhibitions in Taiwan and Korea. I enjoy the way Sakai has created his own izome (indigo blue) crackled glaze on his jars ...click for details

Yoshiga Hatao(b.1943) is the first of the late great Hagi ceramic artist Yoshiga Taibi(1915-1991) and he studied under his father from a very early age. I chose this Yoshiga vase for the elegant form and very pleasing glazing contrasting with the sandy clay; the glaze near the base appears as waves washing upon a shore. In perfect condition with a signed box, 22cm.tallx16, signed on base.

Here is a 13th-14th century Tokoname tsubo-jar with a full swelling form and shibui 'clay flavor.' Around the neck are small speckles of ash glaze, yet for the most part this jar speaks of form and clay. As noticed in the photos the neck has been chipped and broken; it only adds mystique. A piece we often look for yet rarely find, it stands 23.5cm.tallx24, no box, yet a custom one can be made for a bit extra.

Here is a smaller version of the recently listed larger Harada Shuroku Bizen sliced jar; this one exudes the same energy, great firing, and sculptural form, complete with added 'Raku Pleasure' stones from Kyoto. In perfect condition with a signed box, 20.2cm.tallx27, signed on side. Harada is by far one of our favorite Bizen ceramic artists: e-yakimono.net/html/harada-shuroku-jt.html

Nakamura Kimpei (b.1935) is a revolutionary ceramic potter who takes as much from his traditional upbringing in Kanazawa as he does from 1960s West Coast Pop-Funk art; his work is always innovative on some level and never boring, in fact he loves to challenge his audience and his students at the Tokyo art university where is a professor. A good article about Nakamura can be read in the Japan Times at search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/fa20060525a3.html This is a rare and important 1969 work that is ...click for details

Kimura Yoshiro(b.1946) is really quite an amazing ceramic artist in his pure vision of blue vessels. On this rippling water-like glazed bowl one's senses are filled with coolness and delight upon viewing it. The blue tones change from sky blue near the lip to an opaque blue-purple in the pool. A fine example of Kimura's work in perfect condition with a signed box, 9cm.tallx29, stamped on base, dating to 1987. Kimura is an important contemporary ceramic artist with works in the Tokyo Nati ...click for details
