A very shibui, old Bizen Ningyo-dokkuri (doll figure tokkuri flask) from the Edo Period (1603-1868). The tokkuri has triangular shape, with three main sides that are indented and pushed in for easy handling. On one side is one of the Shichifukujin (seven lucky gods) called Hotei, who was snuggly placed into an indentation on the facade. Please notice the happy face, this is a key point when evaluating such pieces; if the face is not clear--and there are plenty of those--the value is much less on ...click for details

This mid-late 1500s Bizen tsubo was originally used by farmers to store seeds, etc..and is now a perfect vessel for chabana or 'tea flowers.' When looking at jars from this period a few points are of major importance to tell from later copies; these are the way the lip is formed, shoulders, and overall form as well as 'clay flavor.' This tsubo has all traits placing it to the mid-late Muromachi period and a few reference photos from books are included in this listing. You'll b ...click for details

Many applied figures can be found on Bizen tokkuri and many are called ningyo-dokkuri--ningyo meaning doll or figure--and we find images of 'lucky gods' or other auspicious images. Most are on the large size and often square of round. It is very rare to find one as offered here in terms of form and the applied shishi on each side. The shishi has very fine detail and is very well positioned inside his/her universal enso circle. Late Edo Bizen has the sheen of bronze or copper as the old k ...click for details

One aspect of Bizen I truly love is its older okimono or figure side. Many masterpieces were made in the Momoyama period, yet most date from the Meiji period. Here is a fine example of Hotei---pictured in Katsura Matasaburo's
Meiji Bizen Saikumono book---leaning on his bag of treasures. Also more about Bizen saikumono/okimono can be read in an article I wrote in Daruma (www.darumamagazine.com) issue 31. In fine condition, a teeny nick where the fan ends in his hand, 9.2cm.tall, 16cm.long a ...click for details
