Mingei potter Ueda Tsuneji (1914-1987) was master of the Kinozara-yama kiln in Kyoto which he opened in 1936. An apprentice of Kawai Kanjiro, Ueda studied the difficult mosaic-marbled style known as neriage or nerikomi with the great Kawai who reinvented this Chinese T'ang dynasty style. Ueda's work is in the Japan Folk Crafts Museum as well as many prominent private collections. This is a classic Ueda neriage chawan and one of maybe one or two that find me each year. This chawan fully i ...click for details

This is the most complex form of any of the Hasu works we are currently showing; the angular form changes from every turn and every height of viewing. It's a very solid form with a small opening for flowers, although the piece in and of itself seems like a forest in its own right. In perfect condition with a signed box, 24cm.tallx38x23, signed on base.

This is the largest work of the current ten pieces we have by Hasu Yoshitaka--please see preview photos of the others in listing 735504. The rounded box form reminds me of the bold ones that Tsuji Seimei made in the 1980s. Hasu's box has the same energy yet with a completely different glazing scheme, here of ash glazes and iron underglaze creating a dark, mysterious landscape. Hasu's way of glazing is very unique and instantly recognizable. A museum piece in perfect condition, 23cm.tallx ...click for details

Of the very few fine Iga potters working today, talented Iga ceramist Hasu Yoshitaka (b.1949) has been around for a while in his own quiet way. He exhibits mainly at Takashimaya and some other smaller ceramic galleries here in Japan. He studied under the late Banura Shiro starting in 1975 and established his own kiln in Ueno, Mie prefecture--home of Iga--in 1979. His first exhibition was at Takashimaya, Yokohama in 1982. His work is either quite bold with heavy ash-glazes combined with iron glaz ...click for details

Shino Jar-Tsubo by Sakai Kobu

Toki City Intangible Cultural Property Sakai Kobu's kiln is SO small he hardly ever fires anything larger than a chawan or sake cup. I've asked him for a tsubo for years and usually only can get one a year; for 2008 here it is. It has a squat almost mountain form with subtle undulation under the body. Iron glazing embellishes the lip as well as some points on the form. Sakai was named a Toki City Intangible Cultural Property in 2002--Toki is the birthplace of Shino in the 16th century--a ...click for details

Kasama is not a pottery town in Japan usually associated with anagama natural-ash glazed wares; it's history revolves more around mingei-folk craft and contemporary designed works like that of Ito Motohiko or Wada Morihiro. Yet, the Nakano father and son team of Oguna and Yasumi are changing that. The father has had an under-the-radar career so far, yet he has shown at many galleries in Tokyo and also in Germany at the Museum of East Asian Art, Berlin. Yasumi(b.1975) studied with his father ...click for details

This Nakano vase has a more architectural feel to the overall form, much like the Sydney Opera House. The firing was intense and this creating the rich palette of colors. There is a small gold filling inside the lip and this actually adds to the overall aesthetic of the piece, very Japanese indeed. In excellent condition with a signed box, 25cm.tallx13.3, signed on base.

I have followed Ito Sekisui's V(b. 1941) career for a long time now and never have seen a larger tsubo-jar than the one offered here. Ito was named a Living National Treasure for his mumyoi pottery in 2003. This tsubo was exhibited in 1998 at a commemorative exhibition when Ito was awarded the Niigata Prefecture Cultural Award and comes from a private Niigata collection.
