As I've noted many times before Kako Katsumi challenges his art with passion, spirit, skill and a fine sense of design. Out of the blue his Muses decided to direct him to Raku chawan. And thus he built a Raku single chawan fire kiln and created some truly fine Raku chawan, of which we selected six. They are all quite light, low-fired (as all Raku is) and have Raku red glazes as well as Ohi cream. This low, wide-faced chawan is a delight to hold in the hands, as I've noted before of good ...click for details

It's been quite awhile since a 3rd O-gama (large kiln) firing Mori Togaku guinomi found its way to our gallery. On March 17th, 1994 was the lighting ceremony and the kiln was fired continuously 24-7 until May 11th. The unloading of the kiln began on June 3rd. This is surely one of the best guinomi from that firing; carefully loaded so goma circled the lip and then fell like snow inside, it has a fantastic form for holding and drinking from, as well as superb 'clay flavor' that only M ...click for details

Ito Hokuto(b.1961) is a porcelain ceramic artist whose vivid imagination and superb skills come to life on his porcelain works. Of all the graduates who studied under the late Living National Treasure Fujimoto Yoshimichi--and there are quite a few--Ito's works stand alone and are clearly different that all the others who imitate Yoshimoto. This Ito jar has many images and patterns encircling the jar all brilliantly painted within diamond borders; fish, owl, deer, ram, bird all appear as if e ...click for details

For a Japanese pottery connoisseur, some names in recent history are important to know, even if they never became "popular" or were named Living National Treasures. One such name is Ezaki Issei(1918-1992). Ezaki is the "godfather" of present day Tokoname wares, as it was he who revived the dilapidated kiln site and restored the glories of medieval Tokoname into the Showa Era. He is credited for reviving Tokoname wares like Kaneshige Toyo for Bizen or Nakazato Muan for Karatsu ...click for details

In complete contrast to the controlled and refined tenmoku Kimura jar here is a rough and unruly crusty natural ash-glazed vase by Yoshisuji Keiji, one of our favorite anagama potters in all of Japan. We selected a fresh batch of new works and here is the first, based in form on ancient sueki wares of the 5th-6th centuries. It sits on a custom made rope-wa and at each turn--and angle--the variations of the firing are made quite visible. In perfect condition with a signed box, 23cm.tall sitting ...click for details

A 30-minute drive south from our Mishima gallery brings us to Shuzenji, a small "onsen" hot-spring village snugged between the hills of the Izu Peninsula. In the hills of Shuzenji works the extremely talented ceramic artist Nagaoka Masami (b.1948). Nagaoka is not only well-versed in medieval Iga and Shigaraki wares, he has developed a creative and distinct style, as well as nurturing the skill of getting superb firings from his very small anagama kiln; surely evident on this intensely ...click for details
