A Japanese temple is built on wooden pillars that rest on stones. Those stones are called garan-seki and that's where the shape of this Iga kogo by the late great Furutani Michio takes its name from. Iga is the best known style for garan kogo and this one was exhibited and shown in the catalog of the last exhibition Furutani held in 1999. The glassy emerald glaze on top is shizen-yu(natural ash-glaze) and reminds one of a moss garden. There is some grayish shizen-yu on the top and sides as w ...click for details

Atarashi Kanji (b.1944) is an Iga veteran who has been firing his anagama since 1975. His works are usually very powerful--like Tsujimura and Fujioka--and this triangular vase is a fine testament to that. It is meant to be used on its side, yet also looks quite nice standing. The green ash was applied and drips down over all sides nicely contrasting with the warm textured rusty orange 'clay flavor.' In perfect condition with a signed box--the box is a bit old and soiled--dating back abou ...click for details

Yamada Hikaru (1924-2001) was a founding member of the extremely influential avant-garde ceramic group Sodeisha along with Yagi Kazuo and Suzuki Osamu in the late 1940s. They brought about a sea change in Japanese ceramics, and it is not an understatement to say that many contemporary potters have been influenced in one way or another by the Sodeisha group. In their latter years the members also took to making functional wares. Here is a Yamada action-painting-like glazed white jar that captures ...click for details

A few years before he left us, I wrote this column about Furutani Michio (1946-2000) for a Japan Times article: e-yakimono.net/html/furutani-michio.html Furutani was a superb potter and a fine person as well; he is sadly missed, yet his son Kazuya carries on in the Furutani way. This Michio tokkuri has his refined and elegant form, super-superb firing and classic Shigaraki characteristics; Furutani as such placed it in a very high-quality signed box. I'll never forget a few years back when I took a rather well-known US ceramic artist to Nagaoka Masami's studio, all he could say was "awesome!" when viewing Nagaoka's work. And he said it countless times, so many that in fact it's now one of the few English words Nagaoka knows. Nagaoka Masami(b.1948) fires two small anagama in the hills of the Izu peninsula importing clay from Shigaraki. His forms are always strong and the aforementioned 'A' word. Minegishi Seiko(b.1952) creates some of the finest celadon ceramics--seiji--in Japan today. Thus his popularity keeps his very limited output--high loss rate--flying off the shelves at exhibitions here, when they occur. I called last week asking for some guinomi and was told I'll have to wait to autumn--if then at all--to receive new ones. In the meantime though he said I do have one very good tokkuri, the one you see here. A deep olive green crackled glaze glistens over the slightly faceted ...click for details
