Hayashi Mamiko(b.1959) is an elegant ceramic artist who after graduating from prestigious Keio University started her ceramic career in 1985 studying with Ito Keiji at the Gifu City Ceramic Art Institute. She has had a gallery based career thereafter. In the large English book on Hamada published by Kodansha one can find a very similar platter by Hamada, see photo #59. In the back Hamada describes making this plate, "When this was still in the press mould, I paddled the pattern. The tenmoku glaze is ladled on first, then the nuka glaze edge. Appearing as if it was under the ocean for centuries, this heavily crusted shizen-yu(natural ash-glazed) katakuchi(sake pouring vessel) was actually fired this year by Yoshisuji Keiji. Yoshisuji is one of our favorite shizen-yu potters--he often fires a piece multiple-times--who makes functional as well as sculptural works. A very engaging piece in perfect condition with a signed box, 9.6cm.tallx17x14.5, signed on base.
