Echizen is one of Japan's oldest stonewares fired in Echizen prefecture since the Heian period; it's known as one of the outdated term 'Six Old Kilns.' One of the leading--and one of only very few--traditional Echizen potters today is Kitajima Shigemitsu(b.1942). His work is bold with rich natural ash glazes based on Kamakura and Muromachi period forms; he established his kiln in 1975 after first studying oil painting(1961) and then ceramic art from 1973. He recently showed us so ...click for details

Here is an intensely fired Iga tsubo-jar by Furutani Kazuya(b.1976); more about Furutani in other listings or in our archives. This jar shows the varied 'landscapes' that bless a pot favored by the kiln gods, and the potter's skill at loading and firing his/her kiln. We see many landscapes--keshiki in Japanese--on this tsubo including bidoro-glass rivulets, shell imprints, orange hi-iro 'clay flavor'(tsuchi-aji), and scorch markings; all classic Iga trademarks. There is often found a bit of mystery and a touch of the divine in ceramic art; unlike other art forms, in ceramic art there is a mix of the human touch-spirit combined with unbridled nature that often creates works that are simply breathtaking. Almost all potters I know are quite nervous at kiln openings as not even they know what to expect. Anyway, you get the point and all these thoughts were brought about by gazing this Takahashi Samon kohiki-powder slip-yohen-kiln change bamboo vase. There ...click for details

Takahashi Samon(b.1948) is, as I have noted before, one of Japan's hidden veteran potter treasures. He first studied with Kato KobeeV and Kato Takuo(Living National Treasure for three colored wares). He then entered the Gifu Prefectural Ceramic Institute to study kilns and then headed to Kamakura for an apprenticeship at Rosanjin's kiln known as Kamakura Toubo. He established his own kiln in 1977 and named it Tenshou-gama or "Soaring Towards Heaven." His father chose the name a ...click for details

Without any doubt Harada Shuroku is one of Bizen's finest, most original potters within the last 100 years. His work has a primordial power and presence that I never tire of. Walking around Bizen city one sees very competent work--meaning proficient on the wheel--yet almost none have the Harada's energy--and that comes from the man's soul itself. His most recent kiln firing featured some finely 'rope' works never seen before in all of Bizen's long history. Here is a stron ...click for details

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has a Kohyama Yasuhisa work, why shouldn't you? The list of museums is much longer than one, and of course I am being a bit facetious as we cannot often own works by artists in such prestigious institutions. Anyway, Kohyama(b.1936) is, as many of you know, a legendary Shigaraki artist who has infused his own vision into this ancient style of what Shigaraki can be in the NOW! As Soen-Roshi would jump and scream about...THIS! Here is a fine new w ...click for details
