Here is an Iga vase by Tsujimura Kai very much in the style of classic Momoyama period 16th century and father's Shiro's works. Kai has been labeled as being too good for his young thirties age, except he had a grand advantage of being at his father's side since his early youth. Lots of character in form and firing here; in perfect condition with a signed box,29.3cm.tallx15, signed on base. Look for a Kai one-man exhibition in early April.

Tokkuri-sake flasks have many different shapes and names and one style is called an owazuke-dokkuri. These are usually larger in size and hold san-go (540cc) of sake---enough for two-three people at a formal kaiseki meal. Here is such an owazuke-dokkuri yet one doesn't need a kaiseki meal to enjoy it. It was made by Nakagawa Jinembo(b.1953), a very popular Karatsu ceramic artist that exhibits throughout Japan; Nakagawa established his own kiln in 1982. The rounded form recalls Korean prototy ...click for details

Sakuma Fujiya(b.1963.) is a fourth generation Mashiko potter and current master of the Sakuma Totaro kiln. His grandfather is the legendary Sakuma, great friend to Hamada Shoji, and a grand potter in his own right; a good article on Totaro can be read on e-yakimono.net. Fujiya studied art at Nagoya University of Art before returning to Mashiko to work with his father Kenji. He uses traditional Mashiko materials in a very fresh way; his glazing is exceptional with kaki-persimmon, nuka-rice husk, ...click for details

This tsurukubi-crane's neck vase is Kakurezaki's take on an ancient form, of which he's given it his own flair and style. He did so by making a disc-like base and a tall leaning neck that ends in a beak-like opening; the firing here is also top-notch and was placed in a key point in the kiln. In perfect condition with a signed box, dating to 1994, 28cm.tall, signed on base. More about this important Bizen ceramic artist in our archives or at e-yakimono.net

Shigaraki ceramic artist is totally unique in his approach to this ancient style, having more in common with a Kyoto cosmopolitan sensibility than a country potter. Should be, as Sodeisha founding member Suzuki Osamu took Kato under his wing at a very early age, right around elementary school age in fact. Suzuki was also an admirer of Kato's work as he matured in his 20s. This piece was fired just last month and continues with Kato's shinogi arched forms, this time captured in a smaller ...click for details
