n Kuroda Ryoji's 1969 book 'Contemporary Chawan' he called Tamaoki Yasuo one of Mino's five great 'hopefuls' who, along with Kato Seizo, Kato Takuo, Kato Kozo, and Suzuki Osamu, would carry Mino into the future. Well, two of this group are Living National Treasures and one is a Gifu Prefecture Treasure, while Tamaoki was named a Tajimi City Intangible Cultural Property in 2002. Unfortunately, Seizo passed from this world too early to see his star rise, yet his son Yasukag ...click for details

Wakimoto Hiroyuki (b.1952), along with contemporary and fellow Isezaki Jun (current Living National Treasure for Bizen) lineage apprentice Kakurezaki Ryuichi, is one of the major proponents of Bizen's Heisei Revolution. Kakurezaki and Wakimoto brought to Bizen a innovative new sense of design and form that differentiated itself from the Momoyama Restoration of the earlier 20th century (by the likes of Kaneshige Toyo, Yamamoto Toshu, Fujiwara Kei). It's interesting to note that both Wakim ...click for details

Classic feldspar stone 'landscapes' abound and 'fire color' ablaze on this spouted serving bowl by Furutani Michio(1946-2000). As Rosanjin once said, 'a kimono for food' and right on the mark as food placed within will bring this piece to another level of beauty. In perfect condition with a signed box, 7cm.tallx22x22.5, signed on base.

Hasu Yoshitaka surely is one of the finest ceramic box artists in the land; very few can match his original glazing and bold forms. This is a taller box form that again shows an intense firing creating a dark, mysterious, textured-pitted landscape in dark purples, greens and browns. In perfect condition with a signed box, 22cm.tallx12x11.5.

A finely sculpted Oribe kogo by veteran female Tea potter Kobayashi Junko(b.1936). For four years Kobayashi studied with Korean Living National Treasure An Tougou before coming back to Japan and building a kiln in Mino. For her pottery Kobayashi uses clay from the Mino region, specifically mogusa, go tomaki and odo tsuchi. Which clay she uses depends on the form being made. The kogo--made with mogusa--is 5.8cm.tallx7, signed on base, with a signed box.

Ogawa Machiko makes chawan in very sensual rounded forms, some gray and rough on the outside and silver-glazed inside. Others are her pure Hagi-like white glaze, while others, like the one shown here, is a stone-embedded Shigaraki clay with a feldspar crackled glaze. In the photos here you'll see all three styles. The first one we're showing though is the latter style. The subtle color changes on the body are due to the varying thickness of the glaze. The contrast of glaze and clay on th ...click for details

This is the most complex form of any of the Hasu works we are currently showing; the angular form changes from every turn and every height of viewing. It's a very solid form with a small opening for flowers, although the piece in and of itself seems like a forest in its own right. In perfect condition with a signed box, 24cm.tallx38x23, signed on base.

A fine Bizen guinomi by current Living National Treasure Isezaki Jun(b.1936) in terms of the low, oval form and the very rich firing; the goma in the 'pool' is superb. An ishihaze-stone bursts out from one side and on the kodai-foot a smaller one did the same creating a minor firing crack on the foot. In perfect condition with a signed box, 3.8cm.tallx7.5x7.1, signed on base and dates to 2006. Please also enjoy the Usui Kazunari exhibition now online and here at our Mishima gallery.

Of the very few fine Iga potters working today, talented Iga ceramist Hasu Yoshitaka (b.1949) has been around for a while in his own quiet way. He exhibits mainly at Takashimaya and some other smaller ceramic galleries here in Japan. He studied under the late Banura Shiro starting in 1975 and established his own kiln in Ueno, Mie prefecture--home of Iga--in 1979. His first exhibition was at Takashimaya, Yokohama in 1982. His work is either quite bold with heavy ash-glazes combined with iron glaz ...click for details
