Fallen from the tree of life, this Bizen leaf platter by Harada Shuroku has a vibrant energy that comes from nature herself. I've heard many a potter--and collector--here say that Harada makes the best and most natural leaf platters of any ceramic artist in Japan today; more about this important Bizen artist in our archives or at e-yakimono.net Harada intentionally placed a smaller leaf plate on top of the larger one and during firing they fused together. A sculpture as is or for the table, ...click for details

Takiguchi Kazuo(b.1953) is one of the most interesting and important Kyoto ceramic artists of the past 20 years. Thank you for visiting the Furutani Kazuya exhibition; as a way to send 2007 off in grand style we leave this tsubo online until the Year of the Rat. Furutani Kazuya (b.1976) is the eldest son of Furutani Michio (1946-2000), a Shigaraki potter greatly respected for his work with the anagama, or wood-burning underground kiln. Before his death, Michio could lay claim to having the best firings in Shigaraki. Actually, it was Furutani who reintroduced the anagama to Shigaraki since medieval times, a ...click for details

Dating to 1995, this is an elegant zogan shino vase depicting a pine tree covered with Shino glaze in various hues; overall a very engaging vase by one of Japan's most celebrated contemporary ceramic artists Imai Masayuki(b.1930). The front and back offer very different views to the eared vase, truly a graceful work. Included with the vase will be a 1990 retrospective Imai catalog from an exhibition that toured Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto; mostly bilingual. In perfect condition with a signed box, ...click for details

Mori Togaku (b.1937) is the originator of black Bizen and now--as many have seen--is also down by other Bizen potters. He coats the outside with a dark iron slip that fires to a black lacquer-like facade. Alone this would be quite boring and that is where the sesame-goma ash glaze comes in to balance the works. Here is a rather large Mori black Bizen guinomi with a stone burst on the side and a fine covering of goma; it has a very sublime presence. In perfect condition with a signed box,6cm.tall ...click for details

Uetake Satoshi(b.1956) visited us last week and brought quite a few works for us to select, we took the best and I rejected a few as well; one noted example is some chawan he brought and I told him it had the 'looks' of a chawan, yet not quite yet in terms of lip and kodai-foot. Here we have one of the keepers--and previews of others--that has a fine bulging-jar form that tapers off at the lip; it's in his 'colorful mud' beige tone with bamboo tool incised lines and a dry cra ...click for details

I imagine this very intensely fired Shigaraki plate to be placed on a scholar's desk and used to hold his/her ink brushes. Of course that's only one possible use, I also see it hanging on a wall. Whatever use awaits it....the engaging fire 'landscapes' and green pooled glaze will surely capture the senses. Made by Okami Shuji--more about him in previous listings--it is 2.2cm.tallx24x15.5c, signed on base, no box.
