Once when I visited Tsujimura Shiro he served sake from a very similar vessel as seen here; the box actually reads uzukumaru or squat jar and this is a small version of one. Tsujimura placed his in a Shigaraki bucket of crushed ice and then placed the uzukumaru within it, a wonderful way to enjoy sake, the pour being quite good for a wide-mouthed vessel. The firing here is very good indeed, in perfect condition with a signed box, 12.2cm.tallx6.5-8, signed on shoulder. The Hamamoto Hiroyoshi is a ...click for details

Hamanaka Gesson (b.1943) is as talented a ceramic artist as they come; he does everything well from tableware to Tea wares, and all in a variety of styles and glazes. One very, very shibui style that is highly favored by Tea masters is a Korean inspired brown glaze called Irabo (ee-rah-bow). It's a wood ash mixed with an iron glaze that gives it its rusty brown tones that harmonize with whipped emerald green tea to a divine perfection. Hamanaka's chawan is also perfection in form, firing ...click for details

The wonders of glazes truly dazzles the senses; few in the west truly understand that, Brother Thomas being an exception, I know there are others. Yet in the orient the magic of glazes has been known and revered for centuries, Sasaki Yuzuru carries on in that tradition of creating magical glazes; please see his listed tokkuri and sake cups as well. I've never quite seen a yuteki tenmoku piece embellished with sulfur-like clouds that add a haunting element to the classic jar form. In perfect ...click for details

The year I came to Japan--1984--is the year Eguchi Katsumi(b.1936) won the Japan Ceramics Society Award, along with Kato Kozo(2008's Gold) and Karatsu's Nakazato Takashi. Eguchi's most famous and world-known style is called washizome or paper-dye resist designs. This jar shows such his washizome technique on a Karatsu-shaped jar; the washizome motif of four petals is accentuated by an iron-underglaze stamen and this also shows Eguchi's respect and understanding of Karatsu, based ...click for details
