Each of these two heavily crusted natural ash-glaze (shizen-yu) jars were fired multiple times in Yoshisuji Keiji's anagama. As noted before, Yoshisuji is heavily influenced by Japanese Buddhism and Shintoism and one jar here is from his 'shrine' series, while the other has applied arabesque designs from his sutra container series. These two are smaller than ones we offered in the past and good desk sizes; 15cm. and 18cm. tall x 11.5 and 10.5cm.wide; there are some firing cracks unde ...click for details

The variety of kohiki-'powder slip' glazes that veteran potter Takahashi Samon(b.1948) has created is unprecedented in today's Japanese ceramic art world. At his studio he has dozens of slip styles and mixes and combines them on his works to create truly 'dazzling'--in a subtle way, tones. Often heavily crackled as seen on this very engaging jar, as if nature herself had cut a winding river on every part of the piece. The imagination wanders over the piece in wonder. Still hard to come by even here in Japan, we offer a few recently fired sake vessels---tokkuri flask and guinomi cups--by Kakurezaki Ryuichi. One tokkuri is a black Bizen (Under Consideration), meaning it was coated with an iron rich slip before firing, and displays a shiny and matte tone (like lacquer) and an ethereal covering of goma on the front. The three-legged tokkuri is a classic anagama firing with fine 'clay flavor,' warm goma, and hints of hidasuki(Under Consideration). The gui ...click for details

In September I went to Kakurezaki's to select works and they finally arrived; we'll have most to view next week and we start with the only chawan. It has an ancient feel, not in a chawan way, yet of something simply born from the earth; the form is thoroughly Kakurezaki's and the firing is truly of the first order. It has some heft in the hands, also notice the kodai-foot, sublime. In perfect condition with a signed box, 9.5cm.tallx15.4x12.3, signed on base. This is a rare case where ...click for details

A yunomi for all seasons, a yunomi to start the day, tea time midday, a vessel that is more at one's side then any other. Yoshida Yoshihiko made these three--more about Yoshida in our archives--and each has a light greenish-beige ash glaze with iron underglaze mugiwara-de stripe designs. Each is masterfully thrown, ranging from 9-10cm.tall, signed boxes for each.

We all know Koie is a world-wide celebrated ceramic artist and since Robert returned from LA yesterday he saw it fitting to offer these two Koies, having seen that a major LA museum is moving into contemporary Japanese ceramic art; a great thing indeed! The tall forms each have a round 'ball' that is more of 'partner' to the tall form rather than a top. The clay is Shigaraki. The taller one is 44cm.tall with the ball at 8.4cm.tall; the other is 30.6cm.tall with the balla t ...click for details

We hoped you've enjoyed viewing Ajiki Jun's chawan and understand what a fine emerging talent he is; here is our last chawan in a very oval organic form with a soft delicate glazing and added 'butterfly' inlays as often seen on Nakashima's masterpiece furniture creations. In perfect condition with a signed box, 13.5cm.tallx12. We will introduce new works from tomorrow.....!
