From an article I wrote some years back for the Japan Times: "The oku-korai style, just one of Karatsu's varied offerings, first appeared in the Azuchi-Momoyama Period. The Karatsu potters then were emulating Korean Ido and Komogai chawan. They are devoid of any flamboyant motifs and sit "simply robed" in silence like meditating monks. In September I went to Kakurezaki's to select works and they finally arrived; we'll have most to view next week and we start with the only chawan. It has an ancient feel, not in a chawan way, yet of something simply born from the earth; the form is thoroughly Kakurezaki's and the firing is truly of the first order.
