Please See Description

An apprentice takes on many roles in a traditional setting; of course he/she works very hard in the studio, yet they also do other tasks, such as picking up clients from the train station. When I used to go visit Kakurezaki Ryuichi in the early 90s I remember Ishii Takahiro as 'my driver' on a few occasions. Well, he has since graduated from his apprenticeship with Kakurezaki and established his own kiln two years ago. He's yet to build a wood-burning kiln--yet will fire a 'rente ...click for details

Fujiwara Yu(1932-2001) was the fourth Bizen potter to be named a Living National Treasure, that was in 1996. His father Kei was also a LNT--the second for Bizen; first was Kaneshige Toyo, third was Yamamoto Toshu and now we have Isezaki Jun. Yu had an illustrious career winning the Japan Ceramic Society Award in 1967 and designated an Okayama Prefectural Intangible Cultural Property in 1980; his works are in major museums here in Japan and worldwide. This tokkuri dates to the late 1960s-early 70 ...click for details

Robert Okazaki(b.1942 in California) is a Karatsu potter who married into the famous Nakazato family. He first studied in Bizen with LNT Fujiwara Kei starting in 1971 and stayed for four years. I found an old Bizen book that shows Kei instructed Yu and Yoshimoto Tadashi, Okazaki and Okada Teru on the art of firing the kiln; the other potter in the photo I am not sure of; photo attached in the listing. Okazaki had his debut exhibition in 1974 at Tenmaya in Okayama and then did a four year study w ...click for details

Yamamoto Izuru(b.1944)is the fourth son of the late Bizen Living National Treasure Yamamoto Toshu. Izuru's known for his interesting forms and studies on clay and the combining of different clays to bring out different colors on pieces, this is called shusai. Yet, he also fires--not that often though--traditional Yamamoto style pots and here is an excellent example of that. The form is similar to that of his father---full bunrin-apple form--and the firing is a rich varied colored yohen with ...click for details

Ajiki Hiro's chawan are a world onto themselves; or as Raku himself sometimes say a cosmos. Ajiki is well-known for his Basara salt-glazed checkered chawan and even the MET in NYC acquired one a few years ago. Each one is unique and we have two recently fired ones to offer. The first one is rounder and fuller with some ash glaze in the pool that most likely dripped from the kiln ceiling, a very fortuitous signal from the kiln gods! In perfect condition with a signed box, 10cm.tallx11.5; more ...click for details

Veteran Bizen potter Yoshimoto Shuho(b.1938) looks back to the fifth through twelfth centuries for his inspiration. That's when the Sueki tradition was introduced from Korea using an anagama. More about sueki on e-yakimono.net Yoshimoto is the only potter in Bizen (out of 500 or so) who makes Bizen-Sue and he is a consummate potter with a great spirit in an austere, Shinto spirit. This Bizen-Sue vase has a strong-confident form and richly subtle natural ash-glaze covering in light ghostly gr ...click for details
