Last Friday I visited Koie Ryoji(b.1938) at his mountain studio in Gifu (an eight hour round-trip drive done in one day, whew) and selected 44 works for a 'Koie Week' exhibition starting today. We'll be offering the works each day in form themes starting from the largest today--tsubo-jars-vases--and finishing on Friday with guinomi. If you're not sure who Koie is--and his great importance in the Japanese ceramic art world--then please visit e-yakimono.net or do a web search. Our ...click for details

Uraguchi Masayuki (b.1964) is quickly gaining momentum as *the* celadon artist to watch. Having studied under the late Living National Treasure Miura Koheiji (1933-2006), Uraguchi's works not only exhibit a sharp sense of form, his many experiments in glazes have produced new and unique celadon glazes that are authentically Uraguchi's. We may add he's the only celadon apprentice that Miura has had and acknowledged. Miruji, Kokusho, Kokuyosai are names for his original Seiji/celadon a ...click for details

Sakuma Fujiya(b.1963.) is a fourth generation Mashiko potter and current master of the Sakuma Totaro kiln. Yes, his grandfather is the legendary Sakuma, great friend to Hamada Shoji, and a grand potter in his own right. A good article on Totaro can be read on e-yakimono.net. Fujiya studied art at Nagoya University of Art before returning to Mashiko to work with his father Kenji. He uses traditional Mashiko materials in a very fresh way; his glazing is exceptional with kaki-persimmon, nuka-rice h ...click for details

Influenced by foreign potters in the 60s, Nishimura(b.1947)decided that clay could be painted on without traditional figures or designs, these have acrylic paints on the outside: inside he placed an ordinary
household item or kiln shard--even he doesn't recall what is in it--and each smooth burnished piece rattles and shifts when the piece is picked up; both date from 2000. One is 14cm.tallx26x24.5 and the other is 13x27x26.5, signed on side, box extra. Such works have been shown in various ...click for details

Here is an intensely fired small squat uzukumaru jar by veteran potter Nagaoka Masami. We've featured his work over the years and more about this Izu-based potter can be read in our archives. Situated near the fire box, the jar has a rich natural ash-glazing--shizenyu--and we could call this a Shigaraki or Iga piece, instead I label it yakishime--meaning an unglazed high-fired stoneware pot. The clay is from Shigaraki I will point out. Anyway, Nagaoka gave it a fat gourd form with stamps and ...click for details

The wild man of the Japanese ceramic art world--and master potter--Koie Ryoji revived his 1989-90 Chernobyl series last year in a very limited edition--all different--and here is one work from that series. Koie pulverized production line Seto chawan to make the grainy-brittle mound that sits atop a fire brick base. He placed a glass bottle into the clay that melted during the firing leaving light green and purple tones. Stamped with Chernobyl and 2006, the work is political-social and artistic s ...click for details

A bold and classic Nezumi Shino chawan by Hori Ichiro, like holding an enchanted forest. Great form, firing and kodai-foot; in perfect condition with a signed box, 9cm.tallx13.2, signed on base.
