In today's world if there was a visual definition of Mingei this sturdy chawan by Kawai Toru(.b.1941) would surely qualify. It is , like Toru's father Takeichi's and uncle Kanjiro's works, artistic as well as lovely-unique in form with fine glazing. Toru's chawan is on the large side--good for koicha-thick tea--with deep chocolate and persimmon tones that mix and flow over the entire chawan (especially on the deep shinogi sides and kodai) and blend together to make a harmonio ...click for details

I was lucky to have met Matsuda KazanIV (1936-2003) many times, the first time at a Tokyo exhibition in the late 80s and then later at his studio in Bizen. He was a true, humble Bizen potter--designated an Okayama Prefectural Cultural Property in 2002--who made solid traditional works for Tea, flowers, the table and sake. As with Fujiwara Ken's works, there is a quiet confidence in form combined with excellent learned and intuitive skills in firing his noborigama; his rare moku-me wood grain ...click for details

Issue number 50 (1997) of the popular ceramic journal HONOHO GEIJUTSU focused on 'The Spirit of Mino.' The lead off article was about Hayashi Shotaro (b1947). Hayashi is the younger brother of the late Mino great Hayashi Kotaro and studied under Kotaro establishing his own kiln in 1974. He was designated a Toki City Intangible Cultural Property in 2002. Hayashi makes some of the most dynamic Mino around focusing mainly on Shino and Oribe. This is an earlier work in a more classic tone wi ...click for details

This Shigaraki tsubo-jar by Otani Shiro has got it all; 'fire-color' hi-iro in many tones (and even a rare luster feel), ash-patches and drips over a crinkled 'melon-skin,' the full form allows all these characteristics to unfold without competing; a fine harmony. Otani(b.1936) is a Shigaraki Intangible Cultural Property and more about him can be viewed in our archives. In perfect condition with a signed box, 25cm.tallx27, signed on base.

The form is a tightly-shaped gourd and the glazing is divine on this vase-tokkuri made by Living National Treasure Tokuda YasokichiIII when he was still known as Masahiko. Dark purples, yellow glow, shades of blues and greens all blend together to create a very prismatic work. The box has 'vase' written--one bud vase--and surely it will also make a wonderful tokkuri. In perfect condition with a signed box, stamped Kutani-Masahiko on base, 17cm.tall, dating to the early 1970s.

Looking as if urushi-lacquer, the dark tenmoku glaze has shades of black and brown that perfectly act as a canvas for the ethereal reddish-purple-salmon flower designs on the front and back of these five beer cups; very surreal. Made by Okawachi Yasuhiro(b.1952), they were a bit hard to photograph, a bit darker in person and quite light in the hand. Each in perfect condition with a signed box, 12cm.tall, signed on base.
