We are extremely proud to present the world debut of Ajiki Jun, a potter with one form on his mind--at this point in time--and in his blood: chawan. He's been making chawan for years now, yet shown them to no one for purchase, at his father's studio; yes Jun is Hiro's son. As one very astute client wrote when he previewed the chawan, "Seems like these second or third generation potter's sons skip the 20 year learning process that their fathers go through and are quite techni ...click for details

Based on 15th-16th centuries Bizen tea jars, this contemporary one by master potter Harada Shuroku exudes a strong, confident persona that does not simply copy the past yet brings it into the now; timeless beauty. Walking around Bizen--or any ancient potting town for that matter--one sees 1000s of lifeless copies of all classical forms, uninspired, 'plastic' clay flavor, and just plain boring. Harada is the exception and only one of very few in a town that boasts 100s of potters. Two oth ...click for details

Wada Morihiro(1944-2008), one of Japan's most important ceramic artists of the past 30 years, has left us much to early; he passed away a few weeks ago at the age of 64. Wada's works have been honored the world over and his pieces are in major private and public collections. His work is all about form and thoroughly original designs. Here are two guinomi that we were lucky enough to find just yesterday and these could possibly be the last ones for some time to come; each is a triumph for ...click for details

Taking hints from Yayoi period (circa 3 B.C.)red pots all the way to the 20th century genius of Kamoda Shoji's(1933-1983) forms, Kako Katsumi(b.1965)is creating works imbibed with the same spirit of the unknown, and known, potters noted above. This emerging ceramic artist is someone we've been following for a number of years and continue to be thoroughly impressed with his new works. Here is a large bowl with a sophisticated temperament and tasteful design that no other potter in Japan i ...click for details

Ono Kotaro (b.1953), winner of the 4th Mashiko Ceramics Competition Hamada Shoji Prize, creates sleek, sharp porcelain wares. What is unique about this artist--besides being based in northern Hokkaido--is that his porcelain has two sides to its character: at first glance, his wares look crisp and cool. Yet at the same time, he has instilled in his works a delicate, warm glow that is not often found in porcelain wares. This trait can be seen especially in his Seihakuji (Bluish White Porcelain) an ...click for details

Fujiwara RakuzanII(1910-1996) was a much loved Bizen ceramic artist and was named an Okayama Intangible Cultural Property in 1954, along with future Living National Treasure Yamamoto Toshu. This is a superbly fired guinomi-sake cup--rich goma on the front and rich 'clay flavor' all around--that dates to the mid 1970s; we have a signed note by Rakuzan III saying such and how seeing this excellent guinomi brought back a lot of memories for him. We sent the guinomi to RakuzanIII and he sign ...click for details

A very shibui triangular tokkuri-sake flask by Harada Shuroku, each side has a different temperament and it all comes together to make a Muromachi 16th century-inspired tokkuri of the highest order(notice the overall balance of the tokkuri); also good for a 'simple' chabana arrangement. In perfect condition with a signed box, 14.1cm.tall, signed on base. More about this important Japan Ceramic Society Award winner in our archives. Wakimoto has such a powerful Noguchi way about his Bizen, surely one of the most inventive Bizen ceramic artists of the day. We continue to offer his recent works and today here is a koro-incense burner that can double as a vase; Wakimoto added small Bizen 'stones' to hold a stick of incense or a small flower arrangement. The firing is shibui with Wakimoto's multi-space firing the tops. In perfect condition with a signed box, 12.7cm.tallx16.5x9.5, signed on base.

Harada Shuroku takes Bizen in a new direction with his double-layered works; the form is made and on top he adds a rough stone-like facade. This triangular vase is a prime example of this style and it also has a very interesting firing of dark greens, purples and brown. In perfect condition with a signed box, 28.8cm.tallx16.7x15.6, signed on base. More about this important Bizen ceramic artist in our archives.

There is a quiet elegance in the form on this uri-melon form mizusashi by Nakano Oguna(b.1945); more about Nakano in a past listing. The firing is very smooth for a yakishime-high-fired unglazed stoneware--and show Nakano's masterful control of his kiln. A growing vine wraps over the work as well. In perfect condition with a signed box, 20cm.tallx18.2, signed Oguna on base; Nakano says it can also be used as a sake party vessel, dip in a ladle....
