Here are two famous Jiro-kaki persimmons (not real ones) fired in Yoshisuji Keiji's small anagama; such persimmons are an autumn staple in Mori-machi where Yoshisuji fires. In fact, the best of these persimmons are sent to the emperor each year. The ornamental persimmons have a rich natural glazing and Yoshisuji intentionally left a few places unglazed to not only have the beauty of the clay seen, yet also as a contrast of tones. Each in perfect condition with a signed box, left one is 9.5cm ...click for details

This is the smallest of the eight Kato Yoji 'Memory of Clay' works we are offering, it now sits on my desk as I type this. The front is awash in shibui multi-toned ash-glazing and the inside appears as if a leaf rising out of the oval form. The back is an akadobe Tamba reddish tone. In perfect condition with a singed box, 16.5cm.tallx21x16.5, signed on base. Please see the first Kato listing for bio info and preview photos of other works.

Sometimes it's just a plain old good idea to turn everything off and have a cup of tea (yet not for a few days, surely then!). Sit quietly, gather one's thoughts and dreams, and warm the body and spirit on many levels. Of course any vessel can accompany such times. However, the spirit in a work is also felt and I know those who visit this gallery know that; a Snoopy mug just won't do it anymore (BTW, I played tennis with Mr. Schultz once and what a lovely man he was.) Anyway, one of ...click for details

I was holding Ajiki Jun's chawan this morning and again thought about what a magnificent object a good chawan is; there's poetry, technique, history, culture, humanity, and of course the consciousness and spirit of the potter all contained within; no wonder the Japanese have held the chawan in the highest regard for ages. In these days of fragmentation in so many areas of daily life and worldly affairs it's truly important, I feel, to touch something of ageless beauty, handmade (supp ...click for details

We all know Koie is a world-wide celebrated ceramic artist and since Robert returned from LA yesterday he saw it fitting to offer these two Koies, having seen that a major LA museum is moving into contemporary Japanese ceramic art; a great thing indeed! The tall forms each have a round 'ball' that is more of 'partner' to the tall form rather than a top. The clay is Shigaraki. The taller one is 44cm.tall with the ball at 8.4cm.tall; the other is 30.6cm.tall with the balla t ...click for details

Wakimoto has such a powerful Noguchi way about his Bizen, surely one of the most inventive Bizen ceramic artists of the day. We continue to offer his recent works and today here is a koro-incense burner that can double as a vase; Wakimoto added small Bizen 'stones' to hold a stick of incense or a small flower arrangement. The firing is shibui with Wakimoto's multi-space firing the tops. In perfect condition with a signed box, 12.7cm.tallx16.5x9.5, signed on base.

Tomorrow (August 22nd) in Tokyo Koie Ryoji is set to receive the prestigious Japan Ceramic Society's Gold Award; he'll join a very select group dating back to the early 1950s and places him, as if he already wasn't there, in the legions of the ceramic 'gods.'(See the list on e-yakimono.net; JCS HP in Japanese only at j-ceramic.jp/index.html; Mihara Ken is set to receive the JCS Award tomorrow, we have an early Mihara, item #792459) Look for some photos of the exhibit and cere ...click for details
