As like the very good Crowded House song 'Four Season's in One Day,' this Shigaraki tsubo jar has four seasons as the tsubo turns. From a dark winter's night to a light spring day, the tsubo changes seasons with each turn. Made by celebrated Shigaraki potter Sugimoto Sadamitsu (b.1935) it also displays a fine firing and traditional 'cypress fence' pattern around the neck. Great for autumn flowers, in perfect condition, signed on base, 33cm.tallx26.5, no box and thus this ...click for details

The Japanese word 'hin' is very important when viewing art. Basically it means 'dignity' or 'grace' and one says, 'hin ga aru' or 'it has hin' when viewing a work, or even a person. Hamanaka Gesson's(b.1943)creations are full of hin, whether it be chawan, guinomi or shokki-tableware. Hamanaka lives in Hagi where he studied with Yoshika Taibi(1915-1991) before setting up his own kiln in 1969; he has exhibited worldwide. In 1976 he started using Shigarak ...click for details

Yamamoto Izuru(b.1944)is the fourth son of the late Bizen Living National Treasure Yamamoto Toshu. Izuru's known for his interesting forms and studies on clay and the combining of different clays to bring out different colors on pieces, this is called shusai. Yet, he also fires--not that often though--traditional Yamamoto style pots and here is an excellent example of that. The form is similar to that of his father---full bunrin-apple form--and the firing is a rich varied colored yohen with ...click for details

Fujiwara Kyosuke(b.1939) is the second son of Bizen LNT Fujiwara Kei (1899-1983) and thus the brother of also Bizen LNT Yu (1932-2001). Kyosuke was brought up in Bizen yet also fell hard for Mino wares and decided to make his own hybrid---such as Mino-Iga from the Momoyama period--and thus his orange pastel toned Bizen-Shino for which he's so well known for was born. Here is a fine example of his Bizen-Shino with the most delightful pastel pinks on the broad squat jar form; dating to 1980, i ...click for details

This full-ripe form is another original shape never seen before in the long 1000 year history of Bizen pottery. As noted many times before, Kakurezaki Ryuichi(b.1950) has opened up new doors to what Bizen can be, and has become; he is the Heisei leader for Bizen--more about Kakurezaki at e-yakimono.net This henko-jar has a very pleasing brownish-red firing and the form is actually soothing to gaze upon. The angled ears give it a very sculptural feel and add a 'relaxed-tension' to the ro ...click for details

Here is an intensely fired Iga tsubo-jar by Furutani Kazuya(b.1976); more about Furutani in other listings or in our archives. This jar shows the varied 'landscapes' that bless a pot favored by the kiln gods, and the potter's skill at loading and firing his/her kiln. We see many landscapes--keshiki in Japanese--on this tsubo including bidoro-glass rivulets, shell imprints, orange hi-iro 'clay flavor'(tsuchi-aji), and scorch markings; all classic Iga trademarks. In perfect co ...click for details
