This is one of the largest Murata Gen (1904-1988) tsubo-jars we've ever offered, and we've offered quite a few over the years; please see our archives to view those and also to read more about this important 20th century Mashiko potter. This tsubo has a deep rusty toned iron slip covering a whitish nuka slip; in three roundels Murata yielded his brush like a sword and quickly without hesitation drew in sweeping lines. A similar tsubo is shown in the listing from Murata's major 2004 r ...click for details

Here is a very shibui Bizen segmented vase by current Living National Treasure (LNT) Isezaki Jun (b.1936). Isezaki is a major figure in Bizen today not only as being a LNT yet also for his many master-apprentice relationships over decades. This vase with a rich 'clay flavor' and coating of red pine ash 'sesame' on the front is a perfect vessel for tea flowers. I first saw it on an old wooden chest and it is the epitome of a wabi-sabi vase. Dating to the 1970s, in perfect conditio ...click for details

Tsuji Seimei(1927-2008) was one of the most gifted and knowledgeable potters of the 20th century; his specialty was Shigaraki and Iga stoneware and his output over many decades created masterpieces in those two styles. This bold faceted tokkuri was made in the 1970s and it was fired to an intense dark ash crusted facade on the back while the front has a lighter ash dusting. The lip is pure Tsuji in its perfect pouring way, Tsuji was a big sake drinker himself and knew from experience what makes ...click for details

Hamada Shoji was most likely the most famous Japanese potter the world has ever known. Here is a classic Mashiko yunomi set by Hamada. We find his warm nuka glaze in smooth and crawling hemispheres, his signature sugar cane iron underglaze design gracing the front of each yunomi. One can sense the swiftness and accuracy of Hamada's brush and can sense the wind blowing the stalks. A very fine set in perfect condition with a signed box by Hamada, large yunomi is 8.8cm.tallx8.2 and the other is ...click for details

Dating to the 1970s, this is an excellent example of Shimaoka Tatasuzo's guinomi from that period; we see a solid form with his signature--and here very crisp--jomon rope pattern (for which he was named a Living National Treasure) along with a sweeping hakeme interior. The lip is also a contrasting point with it's Karatsu-like 'whale's lip,' and the kodai foot is props up and balances the work to a tee. Maki Yukichi(1916-1977) was a Kyoto trained ceramic artist who studied under Living National Treasures Kondo Yuzo and Tomimoto Kenkichi and who had a long and celebrated career, even winning the 1st Japan Craft Exhibition Prize in 1972. Here's a fine lidded bowl in a rich iron-tenmoku glaze with a spiral flowing motif on the lid and a wave like design on the body. The Fuji-san pointed lid is also a point to notice. In perfect condition with a signed box, 14cm.tallx23.1, stamped on base.

Kaneshige Sozan (1909-1995, real name Shichirozaemon) played many roles throughout his long career, the first beginning when he was 18. That's when he started to help his already famous elder brother Toyo (1896-1967) -- who in 1956 was designated a Living National Treasure for Bizen ware -- with loading and firing their climbing chambered kiln. In 1927 Sozan began to study Ko-Bizen and in 1930 both brothers were successful in reproducing the tsuchi-aji (clay flavor) of Momoyama Period Bizen ...click for details

The reason I selected this chawan by Living National Treasure Shimaoka Tatsuzo is for a few reasons, one of
which is the rare age, others include the fine/sturdy form, a very 'jimi'
quiet strength temperament, craftsman 'bamboo node' foot, and last, but not least, is the clarity of the jomon rope pattern, for which Shimaoka was designated a LNT for. Tea will look great inside as well. In perfect condition with a signed box, circa 1974, 10.1cm.tallx12.5, stamped on base, a museu ...click for details

"Bizen ceramist Fujiwara Ken (1924-1977) has to rank as one of my all-time favorite potters in Japan. There is a mysterious link between us that can never be expressed in words- it is a spiritual connection between two souls that have never met in the flesh. His pieces are poetry to me. I often wonder what happened to Fujiwara, as he passed from this world in his early fifties. I know that he was fond of sake, but I believe there must have been some compelling reason behind that obsession. ...click for details
