Here are five fine jewel-like crackled glazed celadon guinomi by Watanabe Akihiko(b.1959), who used to be a Yamagata based potter until he recently moved to Shizuoka, see Robert's blog. His works are a joy to gaze upon for the mesmerizing glazing, and as the Japanese often say deeper beauty comes through the use of such pieces, in this case for a good daiginjo or any other worthy sake. All in perfect condition with signed boxes, basic guinomi sizes (exact on request), signed on base; kampai ...click for details

Hatano Zenzo (b.1942) was named a Yamaguchi Prefecture Intangible Cultural Property holder for his Hagi wares in 2003. Born in Karatsu, he studied pottery in both Karatsu and Arita before moving to Hagi to apprentice under Hagi great Yoshiga Taibi (1915-1991). He learnt much from his master, and has moved on to create both traditional and modern Hagi wares with both elegance and delicacy -these characteristics gave Zenzo (a beautiful ring to his name) the esteemed designation for Hagi. Here is a very shibui Bizen segmented vase by current Living National Treasure (LNT) Isezaki Jun (b.1936). Isezaki is a major figure in Bizen today not only as being a LNT yet also for his many master-apprentice relationships over decades. This vase with a rich 'clay flavor' and coating of red pine ash 'sesame' on the front is a perfect vessel for tea flowers. I first saw it on an old wooden chest and it is the epitome of a wabi-sabi vase. Dating to the 1970s, in perfect conditio ...click for details

Such an elongated spout as seen on this Yoshikawa Masamichi chabin is more often than not used for pouring sake. Yet Yoshikawa has never been a predictable ceramic artist, his creativity is world recognized. This chabin ('tea bottle' tea pot) has 'straining' holes inside the piece and thus is a tea pot for fine sencha. Of course it can also be used to pour sake at a celebratory event, such as New Year's Day or a birthday. The balance of the overall form is excellent between t ...click for details

Sometimes it's just a plain old good idea to turn everything off and have a cup of tea (yet not for a few days, surely then!). Sit quietly, gather one's thoughts and dreams, and warm the body and spirit on many levels. Of course any vessel can accompany such times. However, the spirit in a work is also felt and I know those who visit this gallery know that; a Snoopy mug just won't do it anymore (BTW, I played tennis with Mr. Schultz once and what a lovely man he was.) Anyway, one of ...click for details

Inoue Taishu(b.1941) is a ceramic artist who should be recognized as a Living National Treasure for Shodai-yaki. As every worthy potting center needs a LNT, or simply a leader, without a doubt for Shodai-yaki it's Inoue-sensei. He first studied in Kyoto with Morino Kako (1959, Taimei's father) and then studied at the Shodai Takemiya kiln(1960) with the first Chikashige Jitaro. A few years later he established his own kiln in Kumamoto in 1965 and then built a noborigama kiln at the base o ...click for details

Tsuji Seimei(1927-2008) was one of the most gifted and knowledgeable potters of the 20th century; his specialty was Shigaraki and Iga stoneware and his output over many decades created masterpieces in those two styles. This bold faceted tokkuri was made in the 1970s and it was fired to an intense dark ash crusted facade on the back while the front has a lighter ash dusting. The lip is pure Tsuji in its perfect pouring way, Tsuji was a big sake drinker himself and knew from experience what makes ...click for details

Hamada Shoji was most likely the most famous Japanese potter the world has ever known. Here is a classic Mashiko yunomi set by Hamada. We find his warm nuka glaze in smooth and crawling hemispheres, his signature sugar cane iron underglaze design gracing the front of each yunomi. One can sense the swiftness and accuracy of Hamada's brush and can sense the wind blowing the stalks. A very fine set in perfect condition with a signed box by Hamada, large yunomi is 8.8cm.tallx8.2 and the other is ...click for details
