Many Japanese ceramic artist's calligraphy are as highly prized as their ceramics. We see framed ink drawings and kanji by Kawakita Handeshi, Kato Tokuro, Arakawa Toyozo, Rosanjin and many many others always at retrospective exhibitions. The value placed on brushwork in the Orient is well known and one reason boxes for ceramics are also so much a valuable aspect to the contents. Many contemporary ceramic artists often display examples of their brushwork at exhibition and Koie Ryoji is within that circle--also think Kumano. Here is a fine example of Koie's calligraphy that reads Shigaraki Tsubo, Ryo, stamped. The piece is mounted on a shibui cloth and rests within a strong wooden frame. A fine ceramic piece looks quite nice when matched with calligraphy. The frame size here is 56cm.tallx48 wide; all in perfect condition.
